Prof. Dr. Konrad Reinhart

Scientific Advisor

Prof. Dr. Konrad Reinhart is Director of the Clinic for Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy at the University of Jena, President of the German Sepsis Society as well as a member of the board of directors of the International Sepsis Forum (ISF). Since 2001, Prof. Reinhart is speaker of SepNet, a competence network for sepsis research sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research. In 2005, he was appointed council member of the world Federation Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine. He was also the Secretary of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine for many years.

Prof. Reinhart's scientific activities focus on the evaluation of novel adjunctive therapy approaches in sepsis and SIRS. Konrad Reinhart acted as Principal Investigator at a national and international level for a number of multi-centre studies (such as Phase 2 trial with the antibody MAK 195 F against TNFalpha, Knoll, Germany; Phase 3 trial with MAK 195 (RAMSES-Study), Chiron, USA; Phase 3 trial with tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI), Chiron/ Pharmacia, USA; Phase 1/2 trial with CD14 preceptor antagonist IC 14, ICOS, USA; Phase 2 trial with endotoxin adsorber, MATISSE, Fresenius Hemo Care, Germany; Phase 3 study of recombinant platelet activating factor acetylhydrolase (rPAF-AH, Pafase), ICOS, USA; and several more).

Another focus of Prof. Reinhart's research is the identification of new markers of sepsis and the inflammatory response syndrome on the transcriptional (RNA), posttranslational level (protein) and clinical phenotypic level. Prof. Reinhart is author of numerous publications, has edited several books on sepsis and organ failure, and is inventor on several patents on sepsis markers and therapeutic targets.
